Bombay High Court Permits 25-Week Pregnancy Termination at Private Hospital
In a landmark decision, the Bombay High Court has authorized a woman to terminate her 25-week pregnancy at a private hospital, addressing a significant gap in the Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP) Act. The petitioner sought to end her pregnancy after medical evaluations revealed that the fetus was afflicted with 3M syndrome, a severe condition leading to skeletal dysplasia and high postnatal morbidity. The medical board at Sir J.J. Group of Hospitals and Grant Medical College, Mumbai, confirmed the diagnosis and recommended termination, citing the potential need for multiple corrective surgeries and long-term complications, including infertility.
Despite this medical endorsement, existing MTP regulations restrict private institutions from performing abortions beyond 24 weeks, leaving the petitioner unable to proceed at her chosen facility, Cloudnine Hospital in Malad. Advocate Meenaz Kakalia, representing the petitioner, highlighted this regulatory shortcoming, emphasizing the absence of provisions for private hospitals to seek approval for such procedures beyond the 24-week threshold.
Recognizing the petitioner's reproductive rights and bodily autonomy, the division bench comprising Justice Revati Mohite Dere and Justice Neela Gokhale granted permission for the procedure at the private hospital. The court underscored the necessity of obtaining an affidavit from the hospital, confirming its compliance with all requisite medical and legal standards under the MTP Rules. Cloudnine Hospital promptly provided this assurance, affirming its facilities and approvals to conduct the termination safely.
This ruling not only safeguards the petitioner's rights but also prompts a critical reevaluation of the MTP Act's limitations, especially concerning private healthcare providers. The court has scheduled further deliberations on this legislative gap for March 10, aiming to align legal frameworks with the evolving needs of reproductive healthcare.

CEE Kerala Initiates Stray Vacancy Round for PG Medical Admissions 2024The Commissioner of Entrance Examinations (CEE) Kerala has commenced the online stray vacancy allocation process for Postgraduate (PG) Medical Courses for the 2024 academic year. This initiative aims to fill vacant seats in Government Medical Colleges, the Regional Cancer Centre in Thiruvananthapuram, and self-financed medical colleges across the state. Eligible candidates listed in the Kerala State Merit list are invited to register their options through the official CEE website by 5:00 PM on February 20, 2025. The allotment will be based on the merit list and the preferences submitted online by the specified deadline. Candidates eligible for fee concessions, such as SC/ST/OE categories, will pay half of the specified amounts. The registration fee will be refunded to candidates who are allotted a seat and join the respective college; however, those who do not join the allotted seat will forfeit the registration fee as a penalty.It is crucial for candidates to understand that options registered in previous phases will not carry over to the stray vacancy phase; therefore, fresh registration of options is essential. Later that evening, a group of six to eight individuals allegedly stormed into Hamim's hostel room, subjected him to a brutal beating, and coerced him into recording an apology video under duress. They issued threats, warning him of dire consequences over the next four years and prohibiting him from participating in cricket during this period.In response to the complaint, the Vijayapura police have arrested five senior students: Mohammed Zainul (23), Sameer (24), Shaik Sawood (23), Mansoor Bhasha (24), and Muzzaffer alias Mujeeb Jamadar (23). They have been charged under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Karnataka Education Act, 1983, pertaining to assault and ragging.
